AT&T, one of the leading US mobile operators, recently reported a significant data breach that resulted in hackers stealing call and message data from almost all of its customers for a six-month period in 2022. This breach affected approximately 90 million people, leading to concerns about the security of customer information.

The stolen data included records of phone calls and text messages made between May 2022 and October 2022, along with phone numbers and location data. While personal information such as names and social security numbers were not compromised, the breach still poses a threat as malicious actors could potentially use the stolen data to determine the locations of calls and messages.

AT&T stated that the customer data was illegally downloaded from its workspace on a third-party cloud platform, and it has since launched an investigation into the matter. The company assured customers that the access point used by the hackers has been secured and that at least one person has been apprehended in connection to the breach. Additionally, AT&T is working with law enforcement to identify and arrest those involved in the cyberattack.

While the data stolen in this breach may be less sensitive than in previous incidents, it still raises concerns about the security of customer information. Darren Guccione, CEO and co-founder at Keeper Security, advised affected customers to take proactive measures to protect their identity, such as changing their AT&T account password and implementing multifactor authentication. The Department of Justice has also launched an investigation into the incident to hold the perpetrators accountable.

This cyberattack represents a significant blow to the millions of AT&T customers who have already experienced data breaches in the past. Rebuilding trust with customers will be crucial for AT&T, as consumers expect companies to prioritize the security and privacy of their personal information. Moving forward, AT&T must focus on enhancing its cybersecurity measures to prevent future breaches and safeguard customer data.
