Research has shown that women who engage in regular sexual activity are more likely to live longer, according to a recent study in the United States. The study, which was part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), interviewed and examined over 14,000 adults between the ages of 20 and 59. Led by public health scientist Srikanta Banerjee from Walden University, this study focused on the frequency of sexual activity and its impact on mortality rates over a five-year period.

The study revealed that female participants who reported having sex less than 52 times in a year were three times more likely to die from any cause during the study period, even after adjusting for education, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Interestingly, no similar association was found for male participants. However, the importance of sexual activity for men and women with poor mental health was emphasized. Participants with depression and infrequent sexual activity had a significantly higher risk of mortality compared to those without depression.

Previous studies have also highlighted the positive impact of sexual activity on mental and physical health for both men and women. Partnered sex has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, reduced distress, increased happiness, and protection of brain health. Even solo sexual behaviors, such as masturbation, have been associated with reduced stress, better sleep, and enhanced mood. While the benefits of sexual activity are well-documented, more research is needed to understand how different types of sexual activity influence long-term health outcomes.

One of the limitations of the study was the lack of detailed information on the nature of sexual activity. The authors mentioned that including a sexual satisfaction subscale could help overcome this limitation in future studies. Additionally, there is a growing interest in exploring the connection between sexual health and overall health, as well as its impact on long-term mortality outcomes. More research is needed to fully understand the complex relationship between sexual activity and longevity.

The study suggests that regular sexual activity, in a general sense, may have a positive impact on women’s longevity. However, it is essential to consider individual circumstances and listen to your body. While engaging in sexual activity may bring health benefits, moderation and self-awareness are key. As further research continues to explore this relationship, it is important to prioritize overall health and well-being.
