The age-old adage of saying “cheese” to make someone smile may have more scientific backing than previously thought. A recent genetic analysis conducted in China has revealed that individuals with better mental well-being are more likely to lead longer and healthier lives. While the notion of eating cheese to improve overall health may seem surprising, it is just one of the intriguing findings from the study.
Unlike past observational studies that primarily focused on the correlation between happiness and aging, this research used Mendelian randomization to delve deeper into the genetic factors influencing our well-being. By examining data from multiple European population datasets, the study uncovered potential causal evidence linking mental well-being metrics, such as life satisfaction, mood, neuroticism, and depressive symptoms, to improved longevity.
One of the fascinating discoveries from the study was the positive association between consuming cheese and fruit with higher mental well-being scores. Individuals who reported eating more cheese were found to have better self-rated health and longer lifespans. Surprisingly, the impact of eating cheese on healthy aging outweighed that of smoking cigarettes and was almost on par with the benefits of consuming fruits.
While cheese consumption emerged as a potential contributor to healthy aging, other lifestyle choices also played a significant role. Researchers identified TV watching as the lifestyle factor with the most significant negative effect on health aging. This emphasizes the importance of considering various lifestyle factors when aiming to enhance mental well-being and promote longevity.
The study’s findings shed light on the intricate interplay between diet, mental health, and overall well-being. While high-fat foods are often vilified for their impact on health, certain dairy products, like cheese, may offer unique benefits when consumed in moderation. Research has suggested that dairy fat can actually lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, contradicting common misconceptions about the negative effects of fats.
As the scientific community continues to explore the connection between mental well-being and healthy aging, further research is essential to understand why certain foods, such as cheese, exert such a profound influence on overall health.
