In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in attitudes towards cannabis use in the United States. With the legalization of cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes in many states, the number of people using the drug has been on the rise. However, a surprising trend has emerged from recent survey data – while cannabis use has increased in higher-income households and among individuals with college degrees, the prevalence of use among teenagers has remained unchanged.
A study conducted by researchers from the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville analyzed data from 543,195 participants collected between 2013 and 2022 as part of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The study found that cannabis use has more than doubled in higher-income households and among those with college degrees. Despite this increase, there has been no significant rise in cannabis use among individuals aged 12 to 17.
While the survey results can’t definitively pinpoint the driving factors behind the changing trends in cannabis use, researchers suggest that the legalization of the drug for recreational purposes may play a significant role. With 38 states allowing cannabis for medical use and 24 states permitting recreational use, the legal landscape surrounding cannabis has evolved rapidly in recent years.
As cannabis use becomes more prevalent, researchers are calling for further studies to be conducted on the potential health implications of the drug. While cannabis remains the most-used psychoactive substance in the US, concerns remain about its impact on the brain and body.
